I read an article last semester (Meyer Schapiro's 'The Apples of Cezanne') about Cezanne's still life paintings and why he used apples so frequently. Rather than randomly choosing a subject, Cezanne purposefully decided on apples because of a personal connection with them. It sounds a bit strange at first, but it is revealed that during his childhood Cezanne befriended future writer, Emile Zola, and as a gesture of their friendship the two would often exchange apples. The warmer colors in this still life make me wonder if Cezanne reflected fondly on his boyhood memories while painting this.
