I like the concept of taking something traditional like painting still lives, and incorporating modern day products and new age culture as seen in the Mario Still Life and Nutella. For Nutella, I like the heavy brushstrokes with the thick paint, as well as the sense of depth I can feel as the viewer.
I agree, it makes things fun! The Nutella painting has a post-impressionist vibe to me, and I feel the artist must have looked at Gauguin's and Cezzane's still lives as inspiration for those heavy brushstrokes and blocky colors. I would love to see how those two would approach painting these "modern" subjects.
I really enjoy the subject matter of the "Mario Still Life." I only noticed all the references when I looked closely.
I like how the artist captured the look and feel of the peanut butter and jelly oozing out the sandwich in "Blood Money."
"Still Life with Bird" is also an interesting painting, although I feel like maybe the outline in the top-left corner distracts a little too much from the colors in the center of the painting.
I agree that the highlights of Blood Money are well done and create an awesome "oozing" feeling! Also, the references in "Mario Still Life" are great and I also how they are arranged in a classic composition that has been reproduced for hundreds of years. These are also really fun, and also combine elements of pop culture with classic painting.
The "Mario Still Life" interests me because it brings back childhood memories. I like how this still life is based off a video game and has objects we don't normally see, rather than the objects we see everyday in a typical still life.
